Baking Tips: How To Extend Shelf Life Of Baked Goods


Baking is not as easy as it looks from the outside. While it takes just a few minutes to finish off a slice of decadent chocolate cake, a fudgy brownie or a gooey cookie – the effort that goes behind making these delicious baked goods often goes unnoticed. If you are a baker, you know the struggle is real! Once you have them ready, the sheer joy of sharing these treats with your loved ones is something that is incomparable. However, if they are not stored properly, they can turn dry, mouldy or hard within a day’s time – and we do not want that. So, how do we store them properly? Here we have got you some simple tips and tricks that would extend the shelf life of your baked goods, so that you can enjoy them to the fullest. 

Baking and air-tight containers go hand in hand. Once you have your freshly baked goods ready, make sure to never leave them exposed to air.  Allow them to cool down and then immediately transfer to an air-tight container. This would help in retaining the moisture levels of the baked good.  This tip works best for dry cakes, breads, cookies or muffins. 

Who doesn’t like honey? A natural sweetener loaded with numerous benefits; this divine nectar can act as a great alternative to the regular processed sugar. The high acid content of honey helps inhibit mold growth. Add 1-2 teaspoons of honey to your recipe or replace it with sugar completely. 

Keep it in the freezer 

Now, this may sound odd to you. But trust us, this trick would help you extend the shelf life of your delicious creations for the good. In order to limit their exposure to air, make sure you tightly wrap them in a plastic wrap or foil, and then keep them stored in a sealed plastic bag. Remember, not to freeze goods that are frosted with icing.  

Cover it with a cake dome 

This tip works best for goods that are frosted or decorated with delicate icing.  If you do not have a cake dome, you can also turn a large mixing bowl upside down and cover them with it. This would ensure that the frosting doesn’t get messed up, while also retaining its moisture.

Work cinnamon into the recipe 

The aroma of cinnamon is just so soul-soothing! Don’t you agree? This flavourful spice not only enhances the taste of your recipe but also prevents it from developing mould or becoming hard. Add a pinch of cinnamon to your next recipe and lengthen the life of your baked goods!
